The Art of Edo Kiriko. First, the glass is blown into a mold to create its basic shape. Then, the artisan uses a cutting wheel to create the intricate designs. Finally, the glass is polished to give it a smooth, lustrous finish.16 Jun 2023Edo-kiriko is a type of traditional cut glass originating in Edo (the former name of Tokyo) toward the end of the Edo Period (1603-1868). "Kiriko" means "faceted" in Japanese, and refers to the multitude of decorative patterns that are engraved on the surface of the glass using grindstones and other tools.
I am always amazed by the culture and art in each country. It is a pity that some of these heritage are endangered and it is my hope to see more handmade items than factory made ones. By ordering this Edo Kiriko, not only you have a fine art that is drinkable but also supporting the artists.
